Andrew “Sandy” Irvine, c. 1920. An elite mountaineer while still an undergrad at Oxford, Irvine agreed to join George Mallory in his Everest expedition in 1924.
The two were last seen several hundred yards from the summit and it’s not known if they reached it. Irvine died on Everest at the age of twenty-two, and his body was never recovered.
